Engine Control Units
Pressed Metal Components for Engine Control Units
A car’s Engine Control Unit (ECU), also commonly referred to as the Engine Control Module (ECM), is a crucial component of a modern vehicle. It is an electronic control unit that manages and regulates various functions of the engine to ensure optimal performance, efficiency, and emissions control.
In addition to these primary functions, modern ECUs often have features like diagnostic capabilities, storing error codes, and facilitating communication with external devices for vehicle diagnostics and software updates.
Engine Control Unit (ECU) Covers & Housings
While the internal circuitry and electronic components of the ECU are manufactured using specialised electronic manufacturing processes, the external enclosure or housing that protects and encloses the ECU can be made from pressed metal.
Using pressed metal for the ECU cover or housing offers several benefits, including a high level of strength and durability, excellent electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties, heat dissipation and protection from environmental factors such as moisture and dust.
Clamason’s Advanced Metal Pressing Capabilities Can Create ECU Covers in A Range of Steels and Non-Ferrous Metals, To Extremely Tight Tolerances
Clamason produces ECU covers and housings in a range of steels and aluminium in thicknesses, ranging from 0.8mm to 1.5mm.
Generally, stamped metal components for ECUs are produced on progression tooling – but depending in customer requirements, they can also be manufactured on one of the Clamason transfer press lines. Additional features such as coining can be added to minimise cutting burr on certain areas of the component, too.
Thorough cleaning is often critical on these types of components, which Clamason can achieve with our state-of-the-art technical cleaning machines. You can find out more about our technical cleaning services here.
Clamason’s design expertise and production options help when customers have extremely precise tolerances for component flatness and cleanliness, while also assisting with any ESD packaging requirements. No matter how complex your component project may be, our experts are ready to suggest the best method to meet your specific needs.
